Google SEO: Are keywords going to die?

Any updates in Google’s search algorithms brings Tsunami in the digital business world. Its recent shift towards more conversation search that depends on ‘gist’ rather than keyword triggered panic among the SEO industry. Here is what we have to say in this regard.

In his recent video, Google’s Matt Cutts has tried to clear out their vision for searchers of tomorrow. The intentions were clear enough to make the search easy for all its users. However, this is not a shocking update, since the search giant has already worked on its Knowledge Graph.

“It’s another step away from raw keywords toward understanding things in the real-world and how they relate to each other,” Matt said in the video adding that the development of their knowledge graph has improved their search algorithm’s ability to respond to ‘gist’ queries with better answers and search results.

Since the announcement, the search giant has made numerous changes to its search algorithms and the knowledge graph. More recent introduction of the voice search and conversations search take us more close to easy search for the users.

“It’s definitely the case that if you have something coming in via voice, people are more likely to use natural language,” says Cutts. “They’re less likely to use like search operators and keywords and that sort of thing. And that’s a general trend that we see. Google wants to do better at conversational search, and just giving your answers directly if you’re asking in some sort of a conversational mode.”

He further adds that in conversational search the more the user speaks, which gives context to the search engine to understand, it will provide better and to the point results. “What you would probably want if you have spoken word queries is the more that you talk, the more results you get because we know more about it, and so you definitely have to change your viewpoint from ‘it’s an and of every single word’ to trying to extract the gist – you know, just summarize what they’re looking for, and that matching that overall idea.”

So here is the gist and here is the problem, of how to optimize your site for a ‘gist’ instead for a or for  a set of keywords?

Just don’t panic right now. There is nothing to panic. If your site is just optimized for the keyword that you are targeting, i.e., if your site truly provides information related to keyword. Because if your all your content provides information for a set of keywords, then Google’s knowledge base can in fact decipher the information that you are providing and in turn show your site on its SERP.

Give Away: Optimizing a site as always is not only limited to using keywords but building your site’s content around those keywords and provide original and interesting content. This is the gist.
